Protesters Demand Justice For Uwaila Omozuwa
Group of protesters comprising of students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), activists and concerned citizens stormed the headquarters of the state police command in Edo State on Monday.
The protesters demanded justice for Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100-level student of the Department of Microbiology in UNIBEN who was reportedly raped and murdered by some unknown persons inside a church.
Uwaila was reading at the church located at the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, the Edo State capital when the incident happened.
The killing has sparked outrage with #JusticeForUwa trending on social media
The protesters started from Kings Square area of Benin City and matched to the Police command headquarters, with placards decrying rape for Uwaila.
They were received by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Ayoola Ajala who assured them that the police has commenced investigations, adding that arrests have been made in connections to the rape and murder.
Ajala also debunked the speculations that the police station where the case was first reported refused to look into the incident for lack of funding.
Some family members of the victim who were part of the protesters also asked the police boss to give a swift justice for the family.
