Tinubu Finally Speaks On Ondo, Edo Governorship Polls
The embattled Governors of Edo and Ondo States, Godwin Obaseki and Rotimi Akeredolu’s respectively appear to have known their political fate following the meeting of Governors under the platform of the All Progressives Congress APC with former governor of Lagos, Asuwsju Bola Tinubu.
The National Leader of the APC, Senator Bola Tinubu, on Sunday finally met with eight governors of the APC over the forthcoming governorship primaries in Edo and Ondo States, where he promised to prevail on Adams Oshiomhole led National Working Committee to ensure a fee and fair process.
The meeting became necessary following the debate on the mode of primary to use in the conduct of the primaries. While both Governors favour Indirect, members of the APC NWC are angling for Direct primary mode.
But in order to douse the political tension ahead of the primaries, eight governors under the Progressives Governors Forum decided to meet with Tinubu to prevail on Oshiomhole and other party stalwarts to give both Governors soft landing.
The Governors at the meeting included, Alhaji Sani Bello (Niger), Chairman of the Forum, Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Mr. Solomon Lalong (Plateau), Muhammad Abubakar (Jigawa), Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola (Osun), Mr. Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo) and their host, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
It was gathered that the meeting took place at the Old Lagos Government House,
Marina, Lagos and the major discussion was around the governorship polls and mode of primaries in Edo and Ondo States. With the APC Governors informing Tinubu that Obaseki and Akeredolu as incumbent governors, have the right of first refusal for the governorship tickets.
But the national leader was said to have told them that ordinarily, he would not have been opposed to that. But pointed out to them that once other party members showed interest in the contest, the right of first refusal of the Governors cannot be above democratic tenets which allow for open contest with an individual with the highest votes emerging Victor.
While adding that it would be difficult to hold down the ambition of any individual, but the former Lagos helmsman however, promised to prevail on the Party leadership to ensure a smooth and free and transparent process.
Although the NWC is yet to officially confirm the mode of primary in Ondo State, but it has disclosed that the Direct primary mode for Edo State is sacrosanct. With the APC governorship polls scheduled for June 22nd.
