The State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is strategizing to entice qualified candidates ahead of the 2020 gubernatorial election.

To do that, the PDP has adopted a no-zoning policy in picking its flagbearer.

Also slammed with the no-zoning policy is the office of the state chairman.

A former governor of Edo State, Mr Lucky Igbinedion disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday during a meeting with the national leadership.

Igbinedion explained that the no-zoning policy was to attract the best candidates for the two positions.

However, ThisDay reports that there was more to the decision than was revealed.

Quoting a source, the no-policy is a horny trap to attract the state governor, Godwin Obaseki who is alleged to be making plans to defect to a political party.

It could be recalled that the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole said Obaseki was planning to leave the party after causing mayhem in the APC.

A General, a former governorship contestant in the state, Charles Airhiavbere in a report published by NAIJA CENTER also said Obaseki had perfected plans to defect to Action Alliance.

The source privy for the meeting in Abuja on Thursday, according to a ThisDay report, said “the idea of a no-zoning for the emergence of the governorship candidate is to avoid any protest or backlash that Edo South Senatorial District is dominating the production of governors in the state. This is because Lucky Igbinedion had governed the state for eight years from 1999 to 2007.

“Also, Professor Osunbor from Edo Central was a governor briefly before the tribunal unseated him and enthroned Adams Oshiomhole. He is from Edo North. Ordinarily, it ought to be the turn of the Central senatorial zone to produce the next governor,” the source explained.”

It was gathered that the no-zoning policy was to address a possible future problem of “it’s our turn” and to present a united front ahead of 2020.

“There would no need for him to come over to PDP and meet a brick wall of ‘it is our turn and other problems’. “Our meeting is to strengthen rough edges,” he said.

The source added, “The governor will not like a party where there would be in-fighting among members with his defection. So, the meeting is to spell out the terms and tenure of the present executive. This is to clear the coast with future engagements with those who wish to join the party in the state”.

The meeting was reportedly held in a closed-door at the party’s secretariat in Maitama.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus presided over the meeting.

Kola Ologbondiyan, the National Publicity Secretary of the party confirmed the meeting.

He reportedly said that the Edo Chapter visited the Maitama office to raise issues about party tensureship.

“They were not complaining that the tenure had ended. They just wanted to know when the tenure will end and how soon they will have a congress because they want to go to the next election as a united party.

“The party has promised to look into the records. They want the party united before the 2020 election so that they can win”, the spokesman of PDP said.

One of the reasons for the meeting couldn’t be far from the current legal battle the PDP is engulfed in.

NAIJA CENTER reported on Thursday that one of its members, Friday Ojealaro Esq. dragged the party to court over the expiration of the state Chairman, Dan Orbih’s end of tenure.

Mr Ojealaro had argued that Dan Orbih’s 8 years administration ended on September 2019, however, the party leadership claimed the chairman would vacate office in March 2020.

“They were not complaining that the tenure had ended. They just wanted to know when the tenure will end and how soon they will have a congress because they want to go to the next election as a united party.

“The party has promised to look into the records. They want the party united before the 2020 election so that they can win”, the spokesman of PDP said.

Last Wednesday, Godwin Obaseki debunk the claim by Oshiomhole that he was leaving the party.

He said, while addressing members of the group, Godwin Obaseki Support Group that “If a handful of individuals start misbehaving and feel we will leave the party for them; they will be the ones to leave,
