This follows after he defeated Senator Ike Ekweremadu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP- who has occupied the seat for three times.

Omo Agege gathered 68 votes while Ekweremadu, who represents Enugu West had 37 votes with one person abstain and one void vote.

Ekweremadu was the Deputy Senate President in the sixth, seventh and eight assemblies under Senator David Mark and Bukola Saraki respectively, was a surprise entrant into the race with many expecting Omo Agege to slug it out with Alimekhena, the senator representing Edo North and an ally of the National chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole.
