Edo APC Crisis worsens as Edo Speaker, others drag leaders to court over primaries
The Speaker of Edo state House of Assembly, Rt Hon Kabiru Adjoto and about eight members of Edo Assembly have approached the Benin Division of the Federal High Court of Justice to seek the recovery of their mandates as the true winners in the October 6th 2018 APC National and State Assembly primary elections in Edo State.
The Speaker who stormed the court today in the company of his supporters said he was out to seek justice and ensure the will of the people was respected.
He said the results of the Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency primaries as collated and announced by the Returning Officer, Hon Sufiyanu Igbafe clearly showed that he won the election overwhelmingly but wondered why the leadership of the party went ahead to submit the name of the incumbent who lost the election.
Rt Hon Kabiru Adjoto who is one of the founding members of APC in Edo State frowned at the high level of impunity perpetrated by the leadership of the party.
“I remain a loyal member of All Progressives Congress; after exhausting all internal mechanisms to seek for justice as provided for in the party constitution as expected of every law-abiding citizen, it became imperative to approach a law court to seek for justice.”, he said.
Aside from the APC and INEC, another defendant in the suit marked FHC/B/CS/118/18, was Hon Akpatason Ohio Peter whose name is believed to be fraudulently sent to INEC by the party’s leadership.
Hon Peter Ologun an APC Chieftain who was among the speaker’s entourage decried the motive of the party in denying the rightful winner of the primary the ticket. He said the dirty game of retaining House of Representatives in Akoko-Edo Constituency 2 after eight years while the council chairman is also from the same zone, would be met with stiff resistance by the people.
Hon Ologun posited that if the anomaly is not urgently corrected, it would be easier for the camel’s head to pass through an eye of the needle than for APC to scale through 2019 general elections in Akoko-Edo Local Government.
One of the leading counsels to the Speaker, Barr Dele Igbinedion called on APC to respect democratic norms by recognising Rt Hon Kabiru Adjoto as the winner of the primaries in Akoko-Edo. He said if that is done, it would be needless to continue the instituted suit.
At the time of filing this report, other state’s legislators who participated in the primaries but were shortchanged were also at the court to file suits in challenging the odious illegalities that marred the party’s primaries.
Some of them are the Member representing Akoko-Edo(11) Hon Emmanuel Omoladun Agbaje, member representing Esan South-West, Hon Festus Edughele, member representing Owan West, Hon Assein Ojo Victor and the Member representing Ovia North-East(1), Hon Osazemwinde Eghe; about four others were said to be on the same process.
Meanwhile, it was also learnt that Hon Osaigbovo Iyoha who was announced by the Hajia Farida Odangi led primary election committee as the winner of the primaries in Oredo Federal Constituency has been substituted in the list submitted by the party leadership to INEC
