EFCC Reportedly Arrests Okorocha and His Wife
The officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly arrested the immediate past governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha.
Daily Trust reported that the agency stormed Ogboko where it arrested Okorocha and his wife, Nkechi Okorocha and two of his children Gerald and Okey Okorocha.
The EFCC had also sealed eastern Palm University (EPU) which was founded by the former Imo State governor.
Nigeria constitution allows immunity for governors and the governor was arrested barely 24 hours after he handover to the new governor, Emeka Ihedioha.
Okorocha had earlier cried that he was being harassed by the Financial agencies because of his rift between him and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole.
“One of the things EFCC is investigating is N500million …that has made them close down the account of Imo state for the past three months and no activity is going on in the state and I think that is not good to a state that has performed and upgraded the name of APC,” Okorocha had said.
“Since I became governor, I have not had one minute of my life; I have worked for this government but what I got at the end of it all was the seizure of my certificate, and the harassment of the EFCC. This does not give me joy but makes me wonder if it is worth taking the pains for APC.”
Oshiomhole had a fall out with Oshiomhole during the governorship election after the former governor’s preferred candidate who also was his in-law was rejected as the flagbearer by the National Chairman
Okorocha was not arrested by the commission – EFCC
However, the EFCC rejected reports that its agency arrested the former Imo governor after he handover to his successor, Emeka Ihedioha on Wednesday.
According to the acting Head, Media and Publicity, Tony Orilade, “the report is fake news”
Orilade denied knowing the source of the fake news, adding that the commission does not investigate fake news, ” We investigate financial and economic crimes. So, if anybody is quoting us, we can then take it up.”
Okorocha’s interest and son-in-law Uche Nwosu was defeated on March 9 by the current governor even after he defected to Action Alliance to protest against the decision of its party.
In the light of Okorocha’s exit from office as governor of Imo, reports began to circulate online on Thursday that he had been arrested by the EFCC.
