New Year Message: Go Beyond Lip Service – Atiku Tells Buhari
Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) welcomes President Muhammadu Buhari’s New Year message.
Buhari, during his New Year Message, said the 2019 election should not be a do-or-die affair and that politicians should not approach them with mortal fear.
In his reaction, Atiku while delivering a message in Abuja on January 1 said Nigerians will judge Buhari by his actions and not words.
He stressed that leaders should lead by example by preaching peace at all times.
Atiku noted that it was not enough for the President to condemn do-or-die politicis if he cannot control his overzealous aides, his security chiefs especially The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris whose recent activities has shown as partisan which against his constitutional role.
He urged Buhari not to only display lip service but to also advise his security chiefs to be neutral in the coming election, adding that their constitutional roles do not include rendering services to the ruling party at the detriment of the free and fair election.
The Presidential candidate urged the President to follow the example of the former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who he said did not only talk but walked it during the 2015 elections after promising that his ambition was not worth the blood of any Nigerian.
Atiku continued that Jonathan lived by his words and statesmanship when he conceded defeat without hesitation, thereby contributing his quarter to national peace and peaceful conduct of the election.
The PDP presidential candidate reminded Buhari that it was not enough “preach peace when he cannot publicly condemn the violent behaviour of his supporters who harass, molest and publicly humiliate his opponents and their supporters.”
