The All Progressives Congress candidate for the Senate Presidency in the 9th National Assembly, Ahmed Lawan has defied the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole as the contest linger on.
The Senate Majority Leader has reached out to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart against Oshiomhole’s brag, to enhance his chances of winning
The APC National Working committee adopted Lawan as the Senate President which has divided the party as some Senators including Ali Ndume (Borno) and Danjuma Goje (Gombe) insisted on contesting the post despite the party decision.
After the adoption of Lawan, Oshiomhole bragged that the APC would not need the PDP lawmakers to emerge the leadership seats in the National Assembly.
He said the major positions in the NA will be held by the APC Senators after cautioning against power sharing deal with the PDP senators.
But in defiance, Lawan visited the three PDP senators during the week to seek their support.
Punch newspaper reported that the Senator met with the governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal and his southern counterpart, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as well as the Governor Elect Emeka Ihedioha of Imo State to seek their support.
The paper quoted a source privy to the meeting with Tambuwal which was held on Wednesday. It was reported that Lawan complained about Oshiomhole’s statement against the PDP, saying his comment had affected his chances of gaining the support of his colleagues particularly the returning Senators of the PDP.
“It was just to reassure PDP stakeholders of his readiness to work and cooperate with them, nothing more,” the source reportedly said.
Senator Sabi Abdullahi, the Spokesman for the Lawan-for-Senate President Campaign Organization confirmed Lawan’s meeting with some PDP governors.
He described the meeting as successful.
Without giving the identities of the governors Lawan met, he said “We have spoken to many governors, including Kashim Shettima (of Borno State) when he visited Laan’s campaign secretariat .
“Many of the governors we spoke to were pleased with our agenda for the 9th Senate and they all pledged their support.”
Abdullahi who is also the spokesperson for the Senate had said at a conference in Abuja on Tuesday that Lawan would carry all Senators irrespective of party affiliation along if elected.
Abdullahi had said, “l want Nigerians to look at those of us who are the actors and take note of what we say. That is the most important thing. I want to submit and assure Nigerians that by the special grace of God, if Senator Ahmed Lawan gets there, he will run an all-inclusive government because the Senate is the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The notion that the PDP would be excluded should be withdrawn forthwith. What we are planning to do is to have a Senate that will be for all senators.”
He added, “I can confirm to you that on the day of inauguration Lawan will garner more than two-thirds majority support from members-elect from both APC and PDP.
“We are talking to our colleagues; we are working on the people who will vote on the day of inauguration.”
However, a spokesman for the Ihedioha, Chibuike Onyeukuwu denied any knowledge of a meeting between Lawan and his principal.
Meanwhile, on Friday, the PDP said it won’t rush into decision to support Lawan.
This was the statement of the Deputy National Publicity Secretary Mr Diran Odeyemi on behalf of his party.
Odeyemi said the PDP still has some months to consult before making a decision on who to support.
He said, “The PDP definitely has its own joker, and as a responsible party, will look at all options.
“We still have a few months of horse-trading and consultations to weigh our options and adopt the best democratic practice.
“This is politics and the party will definitely take a stand at the appropriate time.”
